For nogle udtrykker det bevidsthed om social ulighed og undertrykkelse, især forårsaget af den hvide mands overherredømme. For andre er det et samlebegreb for politisk korrekthed og krænkelseskultur hos en nærtagende generation. Woke er politiseret og kommercialiseret og en kærkommen darling for medier og meningsdannere. Som begreb er det fyldt til bristepunktet med flydende betydning. Woke er primært amerikansk, men giver globale dønninger, også i Danmark.
