From the detective who helped catch the Golden State Killer, a memoir about investigating America's toughest cold cases, and the rewards - and toll - of a life spent solving crime. For a decade, from 1973, The Golden State Killer stalked and murdered Californians in the dead of night, leaving entire communities afraid to turn off the lights. Then he vanished, and the case remained unsolved. In 1994, when cold-case investigator Paul Holes came across the old file, he swore he would unmask GSK and finally give these families closure. Twenty-four years later, Holes fulfilled that promise, identifying 73-year-old Joseph J. DeAngelo. Headlines blasted around the world: one of America's most prolific serial killers had been caught. That case launched Paul's career into the stratosphere, turning him into an icon in the true-crime world. But while many know the story of the capture of GSK, until now, no one has truly known the man behind it all. In UNMASKED, Paul takes us through his memories of a storied career and provides an insider account of some of the most notorious cases in contemporary American history, including Laci Peterson's murder and Jaycee Dugard's kidnapping. But this is also a revelatory profile of a complex man and what makes him tick: the drive to find closure for victims and their loved ones; the inability to walk away from a challenge - even at the expense of his own happiness. This is a story about the gritty truth of crime solving when there are no 'case closed' headlines. It is the story of a man and his commitment to his cases, and to the people who might have otherwise been forgotten.

“You have the luck of Croesus on stilts (as my Auntie Vi would have said) if you’ve had the sort of career, ups and downs, warts and all that I have in that wondrous little corner of show business called musical theatre.” One of the most successful and distinguished artists of our time, Andrew Lloyd Webber has reigned over the musical theatre world for nearly five decades. The winner of numerous awards, including multiple Tonys and an Oscar, Lloyd Webber has enchanted millions worldwide with his music and numerous hit shows, including Jesus Christ Superstar , Evita , Cats , The Phantom of the Opera —Broadway’s longest running show—and most recently, School of Rock . In Unmasked , written in his own inimitable, quirky voice, the revered, award-winning composer takes stock of his achievements, the twists of fate and circumstance which brought him both success and disappointment, and the passions that inspire and sustain him. The son of a music professor and a piano teacher, Lloyd Webber reveals his artistic influences, from his idols Rodgers and Hammerstein and the perfection of South Pacific ’s ‘Some Enchanted Evening,’ to the pop and rock music of the 1960s and Puccini’s Tosca, to P. G. Wodehouse and T. S. Eliot. Lloyd Webber recalls his bohemian London youth, reminiscing about the happiest place of his childhood, his homemade Harrington Pavilion—a make-believe world of musical theatre in which he created his earliest entertainments. A record of several exciting and turbulent decades of British and American musical theatre and the transformation of popular music itself, Unmasked is ultimately a chronicle of artistic creation. Lloyd Webber looks back at the development of some of his most famous works and illuminates his collaborations with luminaries such as Tim Rice, Robert Stigwood, Harold Prince, Cameron Mackintosh, and Trevor Nunn. Taking us behind the scenes of his productions, Lloyd Webber reveals fascinating details about each show, including the rich cast of characters involved with making them, and the creative and logistical challenges and artistic political battles that ensued. Lloyd Webber shares his recollections of the works that have become cultural touchstones for generations of fans: writings songs for a school production that would become his first hit, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat ; finding the coterie of performers for his classic rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar ; developing his first mega-hit, Evita , which would win seven Tonys Awards, including Best Musical; staking his reputation and fortune on the groundbreaking Cats ; and making history with the dazzling The Phantom of the Opera . Reflecting a life that included many passions (from architecture to Turkish Swimming Cats), full of witty and revealing anecdotes, and featuring cameo appearances by numerous celebrities—Elaine Paige, Sarah Brightman, David Frost, Julie Covington, Judi Dench, Richard Branson, A.R. Rahman, Mandy Patinkin, Patti LuPone, Richard Rodgers, Norman Jewison, Milos Forman, Plácido Domingo, Barbra Streisand, Michael Crawford, Gillian Lynne, Betty Buckley, and more— Unmasked at last reveals the true face of the extraordinary man beneath the storied legend.

Tried therapy? Tried prayer? Jesus the Deliverer gave this Christian psychologist a surprising answer This book tells the story of how God taught me, as a practicing psychologist, to confront demons in my clients. He initiated this activity himself in my office, much to my surprise. During therapy sessions, demons began talking to me through my clients' mouths, wholly unsolicited. This was God's way of forcing me into a ministry for which I was not prepared. When I asked: "Lord, what are You doing?" his answer was: "I need to use your office; I need a place where I can bring hundreds of persons who are not receiving the care they need. They go to psychologists, psychiatrists, Christian pastors and Catholic priests seeking help, but these professionals are not discerning that the main problem afflicting these sufferers is of demonic origin. I know you have not been trained in spiritual deliverance, but I will teach you, right here in your office. I will even force the demons to talk to you so that you can understand what this spiritual battle in people's lives is all about." So what was I to say? "No, Lord, I cannot allow you to turn my office into a place where demons are going to manifest?" If he's my Lord, obviously I couldn't say "no". So I went along with his plan. He taught me how demons enter people's lives through psychological trauma, sin, curses and involvement in occult practices and most importantly, how to close those doors and cast the demons out. I share my experiences in this area and I describe the things I learned through them, so that others can understand how to deal with this demonic realm in the lives of those who seek their help.Thousands of persons have sought help but have not found it, just like the woman mentioned in Mark 5:25-26 who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years: "She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse."It was ten o'clock at night. I was alone in my office with a client. There was no one else in the building. My custom with believing Christians was to close in prayer, surrendering the therapy to God and asking him to carry it through to completion. On an impulse, I took her hand as I prayed. I had sensed she needed a human touch to support her. That's when it happened I had just begun to intercede before God, asking him to help her overcome the fear and anxiety that troubled her. Suddenly a shrieking, evil voice interrupted my prayer: "SHE BELONGS TO ME, AND I AM NOT LEAVING STOP BOTHERING ME LEAVE ME ALONE BECAUSE I LIKE LIVING HERE YOU ARE SO ANNOYING "A shiver ran up and down my spine. I stiffened and opened my eyes. She looked like she was praying, but the voice coming out of her mouth was taunting me. I realized I was still holding her hand and I didn't know what to do. My first impulse was to drop her hand and fling it away, but something inside me made me stop. That was my first personal encounter with a demon. It happened forty-eight years ago and it caught me totally off-guard Ever since that night, God has been instructing me, in the office where I have my own private practice, how to uncover the demons in my clients and how to help get rid of them. This book describes how God taught me to see through Satan's psychological disguises and the remarkable adventure that ensued as he has brought me face to face with humanity's personal enemies in the spiritual realm. He trained me in spiritual warfare that I may teach others as well.

When Andy Ngo was attacked in the streets by Antifa in the summer of 2019, most people assumed it was an isolated incident. But those who'd been following Ngo's reporting in outlets like the New York Post and Quillette knew that the attack was only the latest in a long line of crimes perpetrated by Antifa. In Unmasked , Andy Ngo tells the story of this violent extremist movement from the very beginning. He includes interviews with former followers of the group, people who've been attacked by them, and incorporates stories from his own life. This book contains a trove of documents obtained by the author, published for the first time ever.

This program is read by the author. From the detective who found the Golden State Killer, a memoir of investigating America's toughest cold cases and the rewards-and toll-of a life solving crime.I order another bourbon, neat. This is the drink that will flip the switch. I don't even know how I got here, to this place, to this point. Something is happening to me lately. I'm drinking too much. My sheets are soaking wet when I wake up from nightmares of decaying corpses. I order another drink and swig it, trying to forget about the latest case I can't shake.Crime solving for me is more complex than the challenge of the hunt, or the process of piecing together a scientific puzzle. The thought of good people suffering drives me, for better or worse, to the point of obsession. People always ask how I am able to detach from the horrors of my work. Part of it is an innate capacity to compartmentalize; the rest is experience and exposure, and I've had plenty of both. But I have always taken pride in the fact that I can keep my feelings locked up to get the job done. It's only been recently that it feels like all that suppressed darkness is beginning to seep out. When I look back at my long career, there is a lot I am proud of. I have caught some of the most notorious killers of the twenty-first century and brought justice and closure for their victims and families. I want to tell you about a lifetime solving these cold cases, from Laci Peterson to Jaycee Dugard to the Pittsburg homicides to, yes, my twenty-year-long hunt for the Golden State Killer. But a deeper question eats at me as I ask myself, at what cost? I have sacrificed relationships, joy-even fatherhood-because the pursuit of evil always came first. Did I make the right choice? It's something I grapple with every day. Yet as I stand in the spot where a young girl took her last breath, as I look into the eyes of her family, I know that, for me, there has never been a choice. 'I don't know if I can solve your case,' I whisper. 'But I promise I will do my best.'It is a promise I know I can keep.A Macmillan Audio production from Celadon Books

In this #1 national bestseller, a journalist who's been attacked by Antifa writes a deeply researched and reported account of the group's history and tactics. In Unmasked, Andy Ngo tells the story of this violent extremist movement from the very beginning. He includes interviews with former followers of the group, people who've been attacked by them, and incorporates stories from his own life. This book contains a trove of documents obtained by the author, published for the first time ever.
