Es wäre gewesen.« Torpor ist eine Erzählung über die frühen 1990er, über die Zeit von Amerikas erstem Golfkrieg, den Fall der Berliner Mauer und die Medienrevolution in Rumänien: »Es ist der Beginn einer Neuen Weltordnung«, schreibt Chris Kraus. Sylvie Green und Jerome Shafir sind zwei Intellektuelle und »wurzellose Kosmopoliten«, die weder im New Yorker East Village noch an anderen Orten in den USA richtig zu Hause sind. Sie reisen nach Berlin und beginnen eine Irrfahrt durch ein zerfallendes Osteuropa. Sylvies absurder Plan, in Rumänien ein Kind zu adoptieren, soll nicht nur ihre Beziehung retten, sondern auch Jerome helfen, die Anthropologie des Unglücklichseins zu schreiben, sein Buch über den Holocaust. Die US-amerikanische Autorin und Künstlerin Chris Kraus schreibt Romane und Kunstkritiken und lebt in Los Angeles. Torpor (im Original erschienen bei Semiotext(e), 2006) ist das erste Buch der Autorin, das auf Deutsch verfügbar ist. Wie in ihrem Briefroman I Love Dick sind auch hier die beiden Hauptfiguren, obwohl diesmal fiktive Charaktere, unschwer als Alter Egos des realen Ehepaars Chris Kraus und Sylvère Lotringer zu erkennen. Kraus teils satirische Beobachtungen der intellektuellen Szene Ost- und Westberlins und der Bedeutung der Öffnung osteuropäischer Länder vor dem Hintergrund der deutschen Vergangenheit beschreibt sie aus der Perspektive einer amerikanischen Künstlerin.
