Vi er på Nordvestlandet i Norge. I 1800-tallet, i en lille fiskerby. Hertil ankommer fogedens datter, Sara. Fogedens datter, Sara, gifter sig i midten af 1800-tallet under sin stand med den smukke, sympatiske fisker Oskar. Sammen får de tre børn, men da Oskar dør, må Sara klare sig selv, og hun uddanner sig til jordemor – den første i Ålesund. Toril Brekkes to samhørende historiske romaner "Sara" og "Brosten" skildrer et par kvindeskæbner i et mandsdomineret samfund i 1800-tallets Norge. Toril Brekke (f. 1949) er en norsk forfatter, oversætter og litteraturkritiker, som især er kendt for sine historiske romaner. Hun er uddannet typograf, debuterede som forfatter i 1976, og har siden 1982 kunnet leve af at skrive. I begyndelsen af 1970’erne var hun medlem af Arbeidernes kommunistparti, men hun har siden opgivet kommunismen. Brekke har modtaget flere priser for sine bøger, hun har været leder af Den Norske Forfatterforening og juryformand for Riksmålsforbundets litteraturpris.
