HarperCollins is proud to present our range of timeless literary classics. She had been forced into prudence in her youth, she learned romance as she grew older: the natural sequel of an unnatural beginning. Written at the end of the Napoleonic Wars, Persuasion is a tale of love, heartache and the determination of one woman as she strives to reignite a lost love. Anne Elliot is persuaded by her friends and family to reject a marriage proposal from Captain Wentworth because he lacks in fortune and rank. More than seven years later, when he returns home from the Navy, Anne realises she still has strong feelings for him, but Wentworth only appears to have eyes for a friend of Anne’s. Moving, tender, but intrinsically ‘Austen’ in style, with it’s satirical portrayal of the vanity of society in eighteenth-century England, Persuasion celebrates enduring love and hope.

'She had been forced into prudence in her youth, she learned romance as she grew older - the natural sequel of an unnatural beginning.' Anne Elliot seems to have given up on present happiness and has resigned herself to living off her memories. More than seven years earlier she complied with duty: persuaded to view the match as imprudent and improper, she broke off her engagement to a naval captain with neither fortune, ancestry, nor prospects. However, when peacetime arrives and brings the Navy home, and Anne encounters Captain Wentworth once more, she starts to believe in second chances. Persuasion celebrates romantic constancy in an era of turbulent change. Written as the Napoleonic Wars were ending, the novel examines how a woman can at once remain faithful to her past and still move forward into the future. Featuring one of her most likeable characters, this sparkling love story set in a seaside resort is Jane Austen s final finished work. Since Anne Elliot eight years ago rejected the marriage proposal of Captain Wentworth, a penniless naval officer, she has resigned herself to a quiet life at home, tending to the imagined needs of her spoiled sisters and vain father (Austen's brilliant, utterly conceited creation, Sir Walter Elliot). But when Captain Wentworth reappears in their midst, having made his fortune at sea, Anne must ask herself whether she made the right decision or allowed herself to be persuaded against her heart. Jane Austen's last completed novel and her most optimistic and romantic work, "Persuasion" gives full scope to Austen's artistic powers, blending sharp wit and warm sympathy, stylistic brilliance and matchless insight. As Margaret Drabble describes in her introduction, it is a story of "perseverance and patience and delayed romance," affirming the lasting power of love and the rejuvenating power of hope. With an Introduction by Margaret Drabbleand an Afterword by Diane Johnson"

"All the privilege I claim for my own sex (it is not a very enviable one; you need not covet it), is that of loving longest, when existence or when hope is gone." Twenty-seven-year-old Anne Elliot is well past the bloom of her youth. Having been persuaded by her friends and family to break off her happy engagement with the young naval officer Wentworth, whose station lies beneath her own, Anne is seemingly destined for spinsterhood. However, when Wentworth later reappears in Anne’s life, tension and regret are rife and it is unclear whether the two can move past their shared history, or whether some decisions can never be undone. Superbly witty, yet at the same time subtle and heartbreaking, 'Persuasion' is Jane Austen’s last novel and, arguably, one of her best. Bought to the screen in 2007 with the award-winning Sally Hawkins, and then again in 2022 for Netflix's sassy adaption with Dakota Johnson, "Persuasion" is a story of second chances that stands the test of time "Persuasion" was further chosen as the first book in TikTok's Book Club which launched in July 2022. Jane Austen (1775-1817) is one of the most beloved British writers of all time. During her short life she published six novels: "Sense and Sensibility", "Pride and Prejudice", "Mansfield Park", "Emma", "Northanger Abbey" and "Persuasion", which are all considered literary classics. Her writing is full of sharp observations on the society in which she evolved, as well as ripe with timeless irony, and a solid dose of humour. She has created immortal characters that have inspired countless authors, novels, and movies including "Bridget Jones" and "Clueless". Fil størrelse: 507524 KB Indlæst af: Yolanda Kettle

Persuasion By Jane Austen Persuasion is the last novel fully completed by Jane Austen. It was published at the end of 1817, six months after her death. The story begins seven years after the broken engagement of Anne Elliot to then Commander Frederick Wentworth. Anne Elliot, then 19 years old, fell in love and accepted a proposal of marriage from the handsome young naval officer. He was clever, confident, ambitious, and employed, but not yet wealthy and with no particular family connections to recommend him. Her father Sir Walter and her older sister Elizabeth maintained that he was no match for an Elliot of Kellynch Hall, the family estate. Lady Russell, acting in place of Anne's late mother, persuaded her to break the engagement, which she saw as imprudent for one so young. They are the only ones who know about this short engagement, as younger sister Mary was away at school. The Elliot family is now in financial trouble. Kellynch Hall will be let, and the family will settle in Bath until finances improve. The Baronet Sir Walter, the socially-conscious father and daughter Elizabeth and her new companion Mrs. Clay look forward to the move. Anne is less sure she will enjoy Bath. Mary is married to Charles Musgrove of nearby Uppercross Hall, the heir to a respected local squire. Anne visits Mary and her family, where she is well-loved. The end of the war puts sailors back on shore, including the tenants of Kellynch Hall, Admiral Croft and his wife Sophia, who is the sister of Frederick Wentworth, now a wealthy naval captain. Frederick visits his sister and meets the Uppercross family, including Anne.

'In Persuasion , Jane Austen is beginning to discover that the world is larger, more mysterious, and more romantic than she had supposed' Virginia Woolf Jane Austen's moving late novel of missed opportunities and second chances centres on Anne Elliot, no longer young and with few romantic prospects. Eight years earlier, she was persuaded by others to break off her engagement to poor, handsome naval captain Frederick Wentworth. What happens when they meet again is movingly told in Austen's last completed novel. Set in the fashionable societies of Lyme Regis and Bath, Persuasion is a brilliant satire of vanity and pretension, and a mature, tender love story tinged with heartache. Persuasion, Jane Austen's final completed novel, is a quietly powerful story of love tested by time, pride, and social expectation. Anne Elliot, thoughtful, capable, and too often ignored, once allowed herself to be persuaded to refuse Captain Frederick Wentworth, a young naval officer without fortune or rank. Years later, with Anne's family facing financial strain and the shifting currents of status and ambition all around them, Wentworth re-enters her circle, now distinguished and sought after. As Anne moves through drawing rooms, seaside walks, and the careful rituals of Regency society, Austen reveals the subtle pressures that shape women's lives: family influence, reputation, and the limited freedom to choose one's future. Wryly observant and emotionally precise, Persuasion is both a social comedy and a moving portrait of second chances, of learning to trust one's judgment, speak with quiet courage, and recognize enduring affection when it appears again. This edition presents the complete text in a clear, readable format for today's readers.

Jane Austen's most mature and wickedly satirical final novel, Persuasion follows the story of Anne Elliott, who as a teenager was engaged to a seemingly ideal man, Frederick Wentworth. But after being persuaded by her friend Lady Russell that he is too poor to be a suitable match, Anne ends their engagement. When they are reacquainted eight years later, their circumstances are transformed: Frederick is returning triumphantly from the Napoleonic War, while Anne's fortunes are floundering. Will their past regrets prevent them from finding future happiness? With original illustrations by the celebrated Hugh Thomson and bonus material about the design.

Persuasion , Jane Austen's final completed novel, is a quietly powerful story of love tested by time, pride, and social expectation.

Persuasion. Philosophers have worried about it. Political and economic actors have weaponised it. Psychologists have measured it. Prose writers have required it. We’re all subjected to it. And some have even mastered it. Of them, we are often very suspicious. Why is that? Persuasion: A Key Idea for Business and Society asks the disciplines of philosophy, politics, psychology, and prose analysis – the 4 Ps of persuasion – to answer this important question. The book is written for students and teachers of business and marketing but will also guide researchers across the social sciences and humanities.
