Juan Preciado tager til Comala, sin mors fødeby, for at opsøge sin far, Pedro Páramo, som han aldrig har mødt. Men han finder ikke det frodige landskab hans mor stillede ham i udsigt før hun døde. Ude på den glohede højslette kommer han i stedet til en slags helvede på jord, befolket af levende døde. Pedro Páramo (hvis navn kunne oversættes til ”Sten Ødemark”) er Comalas hensynsløse jordbesidder, og historien om ham udfoldes i episoder fortalt af forskellige personer, klippet sammen på tværs af tid og sted, i et sprog som er enkelt, smukt og symbolladet på samme tid. Det er samtidig historien om Mexico efter revolutionen og om de strukturer som dominerer det samfund. Da Pedro Páramo udkom første gang i 1955, opnåede romanen øjeblikkelig status som et hovedværk i den modernistiske litteratur på grund af sin stil og nyskabende fortælleteknik. Jorge Luis Borges har kaldt Pedro Páramo “en af den spansksprogede litteraturs, ja en af verdenslitteraturens, bedste romaner” Mexicaneren Rulfo er et hovednavn i den spansksprogede litteratur som havde afgørende indflydelse på udviklingen af litterære strømninger i det tyvende århundrede.
