Born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, Le Corbusier (1887–1965) is widely acclaimed as the most influential architect of the 20th century. From private villas to mass social housing projects, his radical ideas, designs, and writings presented a whole-scale reinvention not only of individual structures, but of entire concepts of modern living. Le Corbusier’s work made distinct developments over the years, from early vernacular houses in Switzerland through dazzling white, purist villas to dynamic syntheses of art and architecture such as the chapel at Ronchamp and the civic buildings in Chandigarh, India . A hallmark throughout was his ability to combine functionalist aspirations with a strong sense of expressionism , as well as a broader and empathetic understanding of urban planning. He was a founding member of the Congrès international d’architecture moderne (CIAM), which championed “architecture as a social art.” This book presents some of Le Corbusier’s landmark projects to introduce an architect, thinker, and modern pioneer who, even in his unrealized projects, offered discussion and inspiration for generations to come.

A revised and updated edition of a bestselling introduction on one of the leading architects of the 20th century. Le Corbusier is probably the most famous architect of the 20th century. The richness and variety of his work and his passionately expressed philosophy of architecture have had a gigantic impact on the urban fabric and the way we live. Weaving through his long and prolific life are certain recurrent themes – his perennial drive towards new types of dwelling, from the early white villas to the Unité d’Habitation at Marseilles; his evolving concepts of urban form, including the Plan Voisin of 1925 with its cruciform towers imposed on the city of Paris and his work at Chandigarh in India; and his belief in a new technocratic order. The distinguished critic and architecture historian Kenneth Frampton re-examines all the facets of his artistic and philosophical world-view in light of recent thinking, and presents us with a Le Corbusier for the 21st century. This revised edition features a new introduction; some illustrations have now been replaced with colour.

Le Corbusier and Sardinian-born sculptor Costatino Nivola met in 1946 in New York. The Franco-Swiss architect had been living there in exile since 1939 and was working with a team around Oscar Niemeyer on the project for the United Nations headquarters. Their meeting marked the beginning of a life-long friendship between the two, with Le Corbusier sharing Nivola's Greenwich Village studio while working on the United Nations project and, in 1950, creating two murals in the kitchen of Nivola s East Hampton home. The artist put together a collection of some 300 drawings, six paintings, and six sculptures by his architect friend which today are held in various places across Europe and America. This book tells the story of the collection and explores its significance, thus contributing to the understanding of the evolution of Le Corbusier's visual art and its impact on the reception of his work in America. Text in Italian.
