Karma er ved at erobre verden. Dog i en noget nedskrevet udgave. For i den indiske originaludgave er karma nærmest matematik for viderekomne, hvor målet er engang at undslippe en ellers uendelig række af genfødsler. Vi velfærdsdanskere tager nu ikke det oldgamle begreb så seriøst. Vi vil bare have plusser i det moralske regnskab nu og her. Heldigvis har Marianne Qvortrup Fibiger, religionsvidenskabelig karmakender ved Aarhus Universitet, så stort overskud på sin karmakonto, at hun gerne vil give lidt videre til alle os med minus på bundlinjen.

En mand forsøger at begå selvmord på Korsneset i Bergen, men en vandrer griber ind og forhindrer det. Da politiet ankommer, er manden død og vandreren forsvundet. It-medarbejder Sebastian Maddox bliver fundet død i en baggård. Der er tilsyneladende uregelmæsigheder i efterforskningen, og lensmanden Ole Vik bliver bedt om at gennemgå sagen på ny. Konturerne af en kynisk bagmand bliver mere og mere synlig, en hensynsløs morder, som dræber alle, som står i vejen for ham.
