Als Effi die inzwischen Zehnjährige zufällig trifft und bemerkt, dass sie sich völlig entfremdet haben, erleidet sie einen Zusammenbruch und stirbt bei ihren Eltern. Theodor Fontane (1819-1898) er en tysk romanforfatter. Han arbejdede som udenrigskorrespondent i London og senere som krigskorrespondent under den dansk-tyske krig i 1864 og den fransk-tyske krig i 1870. Han var den første store moderne realist i Tyskland og var berømt for sine dialoger. Han var socialt engageret og har i flere bøger beskrevet kvindens stilling i det tyske samfund, hvor det mest kendte eksempel er Effi Briest (1895), der regnes for en af tysk litteraturs betydeligste klassikere og sammenlignes med Flauberts Madame Bovary og Tolstojs Anna Karenina. Hans værker tilhører den tyske kanon og han betragtes som den mest betydningsfulde tyske forfatter mellem Goethe og Thomas Mann, for hvem han blev en inspirationskilde. Effi er en livsglad, munter, viril pige, der som 17-årig efter forældrenes forslag forloves med moderens tidligere tilbeder, den 38-årige landråd von Innstetten.
