Ian Higgins BA (Hons), BEd, DipDiv has been fascinated by words for as long as he can remember. He has written short stories, poetry and many letters to the editor, as well as editing the Religious Education Journal of Australia at its inception. He has now retired on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria with his wife Barbara. In his late seventies he was diagnosed as having late onset bipolar disorder. These memoirs are written from a bipolar perspective in the hope that this shared lived experience may be a help to others.

I en alder af 52 år oplevede jeg en dramatisk livsændring, men jeg har altid følt mig anderledes og har haft mange unikke idéer og projekter, som kun jeg forstod. Jeg har svært ved at vurdere risici, og når folk tæt på mig har forsøgt at overbevise mig om, at mine idéer ikke var gode, var det, fordi de ikke kunne se, at det ikke kunne gå galt. Bogen fungerer ikke som en brugsanvisning, og det er ikke garanteret, at de metoder, der anvendes af mig eller andre medvirkende i bogen, vil være hjælpsomme i dit eller jeres tilfælde. Vi er forskellige individer og skal behandles individuelt, ligesom personer uden bipolar lidelse.Jeg vil beskrive, hvordan mine erfaringer har hjulpet mig med at genkende faresignalerne, som man skal være opmærksom på, især når man skifter mellem ekstreme tilstande.Jeg skriver bogen ud fra en bipolars synspunkter, for jeg kan ikke gøre andet. Jeg er eller har bipolar lidelse, og jeg kan ikke pakke den væk, så jeg i stedet kan skrive bogen som pårørende. For det er præcist sådan, det er; jeg vil altid have lidelsen, uanset om jeg vil det eller ej.
