Alfred Döblins Berlin Alexanderplat z er fortællingen om den bomstærke, godmodige og hidsige transportarbejder Franz Bieberkopf. På Döblins tid var Alexanderplatz omkranset af proletarkvarterer og centrum for sociale udskud, og rammen om handlingen er tyvernes Berlin med dens råhed, kriseprægede atmosfære og tusinder af arbejdsløse.
