Fra 1940-45 blev op imod 1,1 millioner jøder dræbt i den grusomme koncentrationslejr Auschwitz. Et sted, der i dag er synonym med et af de mørkeste kapitler i menneskehedens historie. I denne bog giver Eva Bøggild og Jacques Blum et indblik i lejrens funktion og opbygning med fokus på at levendegøre de uskyldige fangers egne historier. Bogen giver svar på konkrete spørgsmål i 10 temaopdelte kapitler, bl.a. om beslutningen om Auschwitz, transport og ankomst til Auschwitz, lejrens opbygning, tøj, mad, indkvartering og hygiejne, dødsårsager, medicinske eksperimenter, modstandsbevægelse, oprør og flugt samt befrielse og efterspil.Eva Bøggild er journalist, forfatter og forlægger. Hun har i mange år beskæftiget sig med jødedommen, blandt andet som projektleder for Jødisk Informationscenter og som forfatter til en række historiske bøger om emnet. Jacques Blum (1945-2012) var en dansk kultursociolog. Efter sin kandidat i kultursociologi var han blandt andet været ansat ved Københavns Universitet, RUC og Lunds Universitet. Blum var i en årrække talsmand for Det Mosaiske Trossamfund, ligesom han i mange år var en prominent debattør om Israel og jøder.I 2007 stiftede Eva Bøggild og Jacques Blum det jødiske kulturskrift Goldberg, som Eva Bøggild stadig er redaktør for i dag.
