John O’Donohue (1956-2008) blev født ind i en gælisk-talende familie på en slægtsgård i County Clare i Irland. Han studerede engelsk litteratur, filosofi og teologi og blev i 1982 ordineret som præst. I 1990 fik han sin doktorgrad for en afhandling om den tyske filosof Hegel. Som forfatter fik han sit gennembrud i 1997 med Anam Cara. Tre år senere forlod han sin præstegerning og dedikerede sig fuldt ud til sit forfatterskab og et virke som foredragsholder og fortaler for social retfærdighed.
