Is economic hardship, pandemic, persecution, war, social or political upheaval new to this world? Absolutely not! Though the Lord forewarned that a prevalence of these calamities would precede His return (and signify the end of the world), we know these things have always been from the foundation of this world. Only eight people survived the first pandemic, Noah's Flood. Abraham fought in the battle of the Kings to save Lot, his nephew. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, and Elijah suffered severe famines, and God provided for them all. In Moses' day, plagues killed the Egyptians and their livestock. However, God preserved the children of Israel in Goshen, where they dwelt. David fought countless battles and survived a significant pestilence. To escape famine, Abraham connived with Sarah to pose as a beautiful migrant single at Egypt's border post. Consequently, Pharaoh took her into the palace and, for her sake, enriched Abraham with silver, gold and livestock. Displeased by Abraham's neglect of Canaan and crafty way out of famine, God afflicted Pharaoh's house, forcing the king to deport the lying couple. Abraham's son, Isaac, in a subsequent famine, sought King Abimelech, his father's covenant friend, and planned to migrate to Egypt. Then, the king of kings appeared to Isaac and warned him not to look to kings and foreign kingdoms as a solution to famine but to remember the covenant of Abraham. Isaac obeyed and prospered. In all these, we see that when economic hardships, wars and pandemics occur, as they often do, God saves those who follow His counsel. Hence, in famine, we must not devise artful schemes like Abraham and Sarah, for God will oppose us. Or, seek kings and foreign kingdoms like Isaac. Rather, God commands we return to the covenants of old. Nothing in the world is new to God, not even famines, plagues, persecutions or wars. When the Lord prophesied these catastrophes, He never said they would dislocate and decimate His people, the church. Sadly, Christians die from pandemics, and others flee to far-flung countries because of economic distress. End-time woes make God's children vagabonds in Europe, the USA, Canada and all across the globe because they have forsaken the covenant of Abraham. It is time for the church to understand God's solution to end time calamities. The blessing of Abraham is the wisdom of the ancients. Only those who know and embrace it will endure these end time tragedies and abide strong till the Lord's return.
