Florence McLean Criminal Psychology & Profiling

Criminal Psychology & Profiling: Serial Killers Understanding & Prevention Some books inform you. This one equips you to understand, and potentially prevent, what seems impossible to stop. In Criminal Psychology & Profiling: Serial Killers, Understanding & Prevention, Florence McLean presents a structured, research-driven exploration into the minds of serial killers. Rooted in her Master's thesis, the book draws on the in-depth examination of 34 convicted serial killers across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, offering rare insight into their psychological development, behavioral patterns, and underlying motivations. At the core of this work is McLean's "Multifactor Model," a framework built from psychological, behavioral, and sociocultural analysis. Through this model, she outlines 29 key factors, ranging from childhood experiences to psychological traits, that may help identify individuals at risk of developing extreme violent tendencies. This is not just theory. The book brings its findings to life through 18 detailed case studies, including Arthur Shawcross, Dennis Rader, and Joel Rifkin, illustrating how these factors manifest in real-world scenarios. Alongside this, McLean explores critical topics such as paraphilia, psychopathy, brain injury, familial influence, and the methodologies behind modern criminal profiling, including those used by the FBI. Written as both a textbook and a practical guide, this work moves beyond explanation into application, asking a critical question: if we can understand the making of a serial killer, can we intervene before the violence begins? This book doesn't sensationalize. It analyzes, connects, and challenges, offering readers not just knowledge, but a deeper awareness of how prevention might be possible.
