Intan Paramaditha Night of a Thousand Hells

A genre-defying feminist gothic novel blending Indonesian folklore, Islamic mysticism, horror, and political reckoning. International literary sensation Intan Paramaditha--prizewinning Indonesian novelist, feminist thinker, and author of The Wandering (English PEN Translates Award; longlisted for the Stella Prize)--returns with her most ambitious and haunting work to date. Night of a Thousand Hells has been a long-selling bestseller for its Indonesian publisher, Gramedia, and was shortlisted for Tempo magazine's 2023 Best Literary Fiction Award. Its English publication marks a major global moment for one of Southeast Asia's most visionary storytellers. The novel opens with a devastating act: the youngest of three sisters becomes a suicide bomber. In the aftermath, her surviving siblings are forced to confront the violent, buried truths of their family history. Their search leads them to long-concealed secrets--including the existence of another sister who had lived among them unseen--and to the prophecies of their grandmother, whose shadowy wisdom has shaped their fates. Set across Indonesia, the United States, and Australia, the novel explores class divides, sisterhood, migration, shame, abandonment, and the politics of care--all through a ghostly, atmospheric lens that draws on Asian folktales and occult traditions. Readers have compared Night of a Thousand Hells to the work of Mariana Enriquez and Shirley Jackson, calling it "a masterclass in atmospheric tension" and "utterly unputdownable." With its blend of political urgency, mythic resonance, and psychological depth, it is a singular contribution to global feminist literature.
