Richard Ravenbrook The Christian Witch

The concept of "Christian Witchcraft" often evokes strong reactions, ranging from outright condemnation to fervent embrace. This book aims to navigate this contentious landscape, offering a scholarly and nuanced exploration of the intersection between Christianity, magic, and Jewish mysticism. The commonly held belief that Christianity and magic are mutually exclusive is a misconception that this book seeks to challenge. By examining the historical context of early Christianity, specifically its origins within a world deeply imbued with magical practices and beliefs, we will reveal the complex and often overlooked relationship between these seemingly opposing forces. Our exploration will begin with the historical Jesus, analyzing the accounts of his miracles not as supernatural events separate from the world, but as actions that can be understood through the lens of the magical practices common in his time. We will delve into the lives and teachings of the Magi, whose influence on early Christianity is often underestimated and whose wisdom offers a key to understanding the early church's relationship with magic and the supernatural. We will further contextualize early Christian attitudes toward magic within the broader Greco-Roman world, showing the prevailing belief systems and practices of that era and how the burgeoning Christian faith interacted with them.
