Jeremy Jasper Owens The Annotated Trojumanna Saga

Trojumanna Saga, the legendary Old Norse account of the Trojan War, is available in a full, carefully refined English translation. This edition not only updates and improves the translation for clarity and precision but also features extensive new annotation throughout: each chapter is accompanied by detailed notes comparing the saga's events, characters, and mythic landscape to the Greek and Roman tradition. Unlike Homer's Iliad , this saga follows a very different path, closer in outline to Dares Phrygius and the medieval tradition, but uniquely colored by Norse perspective and imagination. Here, the gods and heroes of Greece are reimagined through the lens of Icelandic culture: Zeus replaced with Thor, fate and honor reinterpreted, and the legendary past of Troy merged with the mythology of Scandinavia. Every major episode, character, and divergence from classical sources is clearly explained in the new footnotes, with direct references to Homer, Apollodorus, Pindar, Snorri Sturluson, and more. The annotations invite readers of all backgrounds to trace the saga's creative adaptations and understand its place in European myth and literary history. This edition is ideal for: Readers curious about how medieval Scandinavia interpreted Troy's legend Anyone interested in comparative mythology and literature Students and scholars seeking a reliable English text, with context and classical parallels clearly identified Trojumanna Saga stands both as a compelling story and as a rare window into the story-telling imagination of the Norse world, bridging the gap between the epics of Greece and the sagas of Iceland.
