Hana Lee The Basics of Korean Shamanism

Before Korea had temples, churches, or formal creeds, it had ritual. It had drums that steadied fear, ceremonies that carried grief, and shamans who stood where certainty failed and meaning had to be made. The Basics of Korean Shamanism brings readers into that living tradition with clarity, intelligence, and quiet authority. This is not a book of exotic spectacle or mystical shortcuts. It is a grounded guide to how Korea's oldest spiritual system actually works-and why it has never disappeared, even in the most modern cities. Inside, you'll discover: What Korean shamanism (Muism) really is-and what it is not • Who the mudang are, how they are called, and why their role endures • How a gut unfolds step by step, from altar setup to spirit negotiation • How ancestors, household spirits, fate, and misfortune are understood in daily life • Why ritual still matters in apartments, offices, hospitals, and moments of loss Rather than asking you to "believe," this book explains. It shows how shamanic ritual functions as a system for handling uncertainty-when illness has no clear cause, when families fracture, when grief lingers, when luck seems to turn without warning. The practices are presented as tools for meaning and repair, not superstition or entertainment. Written in clear, engaging prose, this book connects history, ritual practice, and modern life. It reveals how Korean shamanism adapts without losing its core purpose: restoring balance, honoring relationships, and helping people move forward when explanations fall short. If you are curious about Korean culture beyond the surface, drawn to indigenous spiritual traditions, or simply want to understand how humans have always faced fear and change, this book will reward you.
