Robin Benton The Witch's Bestiary

From whispered trial records to illuminated manuscripts, from the depths of ancient myth to the firesides of village folklore, animals have always haunted the imagination of those who walked the path of magic. Cats and hares, toads and serpents, owls and wolves - each was believed to carry secrets, blessings, or curses. Some guided the witch as loyal familiars, others struck terror as omens of death, while still others dazzled with radiant wings or fiery plumage. The Witch's Bestiary is the first comprehensive exploration of every creature once thought to be magical, diabolical, or enchanted. Drawing upon sources from Mesopotamian incantations, Egyptian temple hymns, Norse sagas, Celtic epics, medieval bestiaries, witch trial testimonies, and folklore from across the world, Robin Benton brings together the full spectrum of the animal kingdom as it appeared through the lens of superstition and witchcraft. Within these pages the reader will encounter the serpent of chaos, the black cat at the hearth, the goat at the Sabbath, the spectral hound upon lonely roads, the owl of prophecy, the phoenix of fire and renewal, the hare that leaps across the moon, and the stag crowned like a king of the forest. Each chapter unfolds in depth, weaving together myth, history, trial evidence, and cultural memory with a dark, immersive beauty. This book is more than a catalogue of beasts. It is a mirror of human belief, fear, and wonder. The animals of witchcraft are not only figures of the past - they still watch from shadows, whisper in dreams, and stir unease when their forms appear by night. To read The Witch's Bestiary is to walk the borderlands between the natural and the supernatural, where every wingbeat, pawprint, and cry carries the echo of ancient magic. Written with elegance, depth, and uncompromising scholarship, this is an essential volume for readers of folklore, history, witchcraft, and the occult.
