Stephen Peridore The Active Lexicon

The Scaffolded Speaker addresses the universal frustration of ESL learners who possess a passive understanding of English but struggle to produce it in real-world conversations. Built on decades of second-language acquisition research, the manuscript introduces a rigorous 'scaffolding' methodology. This system moves learners through a four-stage progression-Presentation, Controlled Practice, Semi-Controlled Practice, and Communicative Activities-designed to bridge the gap between shallow translation and deep word ownership. The book identifies the 'Eight Layers of Word Knowledge, ' teaching readers that true fluency requires an understanding of collocations, register, and connotation rather than just definitions. By focusing on the 2,000 most frequent word families that comprise 95% of spoken English, the text provides a strategic roadmap for adult learners to achieve functional fluency. Covering thematic domains from professional life and technology to health and human emotions, the book equips readers with the tools to transition from silent memorizers to confident, independent communicators who can navigate the complexities of the English-speaking world.
