Russ J. Kirk Axes Forging Beginners Guide

There's something overwhelmingly satisfying about really smashing the steel, about feeling powerful and aggressive at the forge. The roar of the fire. The ring of hammer on hot metal. The moment raw material begins to move under your hands. But for most beginners, that excitement quickly collides with confusion. Where do you start? Why does the steel refuse to behave the way the videos and books promised? Why do your early attempts feel clumsy, uneven, and frustrating? This book was written for that exact moment. What if you could take raw steel, glowing with heat, and shape it into a powerful, functional tool with your own two hands? Axes Forging Beginners Guide exists because too many aspiring smiths are left piecing together scattered advice from videos, forums, and half-explained techniques without understanding why things work, when they fail, or how to recover when they do. Instead of polished theory or intimidating jargon, this book walks beside you at the anvil. It explains steel temperatures the way your eyes actually see them. It breaks down forging the eye, shaping geometry, fitting handles, and heat treatment in a way that makes sense while you're doing the work. It respects the fact that forging is physical, imperfect, and learned through repetition-not memorization. This isn't just about making an axe. It's about learning to read steel, control heat, and develop the judgment that separates guessing from skill. By working through this guide, you'll gain: A clear, hands-on understanding of axe forging fundamentalsConfidence in steel selection, heat control, and edge geometryPractical methods for fitting handles correctly and safelyThe ability to recognize and FIX common beginner mistakesA mindset rooted in patience, experimentation, and steady improvement You won't just follow steps-you'll understand the craft well enough to adapt, improve, and keep forging long after the book is closed. This book doesn't promise shortcuts or perfection. It offers something better: clarity, honesty, and a realistic path forward. If you've ever wanted to step up to the forge with confidence... If you're ready to stop guessing and start understanding... If you want to build a real tool-one shaped by fire, steel, and your own effort... Then this guide was written for you.
