John O'Leary The Golem of Prague

The Golem of Prague: a True Story This comprehensive study traces the remarkable journey of the Golem of Prague from its mystical origins through its transformation into one of modernity's most powerful technological metaphors. The book reveals how the legend we know today was largely invented in the nineteenth century, examines the genuine Kabbalistic traditions underlying golem creation, and explores Rabbi Judah Loew's actual historical role in sixteenth-century Prague. Through detailed analysis of the legend's evolution across literature, cinema, and scientific discourse, the work demonstrates how the golem became central to understanding nuclear weapons, artificial intelligence, and climate change. From the Sefer Yetzirah's mystical letter combinations to Paul Wegener's influential 1920 film, from Norbert Wiener's cybernetics to contemporary AI ethics, the golem emerges as humanity's enduring parable about creation without adequate wisdom. Combining rigorous historical scholarship with philosophical insight, this study shows why the legend of clay animated through mystical knowledge remains urgently relevant as we grapple with technologies that threaten to escape human control and reshape our world in ways we cannot fully predict or manage.
