Norman Elliott Fenton The Capture of Academia

How ideology replaced truth in modern universities-and why it matters to everyone. Universities are among the most influential institutions in modern society. They educate future leaders, shape public policy, and define what counts as legitimate knowledge. Yet behind their public image as neutral centres of learning, a quieter transformation has taken place. The Capture of Academia is a compelling insider account of how universities have drifted from open inquiry toward ideological conformity and institutional self-preservation. Drawing on decades of experience within leading UK universities, Norman Fenton exposes how career incentives, research funding, and governance structures now reward alignment over independence. The book shows how dissenting views are increasingly marginalised, how administrative systems enforce cultural and political orthodoxy, and how external pressures, from global policy networks to foreign funding, shape what can and cannot be said. This is not a memoir, but a forensic analysis of institutional change, grounded in real-world examples and backed by evidence. At a time of growing concern about free speech, elite power, and the role of universities in public life, The Capture of Academia offers a timely and controversial account of what has gone wrong, and why it matters far beyond the campus.
