Rowan Black THE AI RECKONING Geoffrey Hinton

What happens when one of the people who helped build the future begins warning the world about it? Geoffrey Hinton spent decades pursuing a question that once seemed almost impossible: How does intelligence work-and can machines learn? His answer helped change the course of artificial intelligence. From his early years in Britain and his fascination with the human mind, through the long years when neural networks remained controversial, Hinton persisted with ideas that many researchers regarded with skepticism. His work on learning systems and backpropagation helped lay important foundations for modern deep learning. Eventually, the world caught up. Artificial intelligence moved from the margins of computer science into the center of global technological competition. Hinton became one of its most influential researchers, earned the Turing Award, and joined Google, where his work and that of his colleagues contributed to the extraordinary acceleration of AI. Then, in 2023, he made an unexpected decision. He left Google. And he began speaking publicly about what increasingly powerful artificial intelligence might mean for humanity. The AI Reckoning: Volume I - The Man Behind the Warnings follows the journey that led to that moment. It explores: Hinton's early life, education, and fascination with intelligence The decades-long struggle to establish neural networks as a serious path toward machine learning The breakthrough of backpropagation and its importance to modern AI His major scientific contributions and growing influence His years at Google and the development of its AI research culture The rapid transformation of artificial intelligence in the years leading up to 2023 The arrival of ChatGPT and GPT-4 and the acceleration of the AI race Hinton's decision to leave Google What his departure allowed him to say publicly The reactions from researchers, technology leaders, media, policymakers, and the wider public But beneath these events lies a deeper story. This is the story of a scientist whose greatest success created a new responsibility. Hinton did not become a critic of artificial intelligence because he failed to believe in it. Quite the opposite. He believed in the possibilities of machine intelligence long before most of the world did. That is what makes his later warnings so difficult to dismiss. The AI Reckoning is the story of conviction, scientific persistence, technological triumph, and the uneasy questions that can emerge when a long-held dream finally becomes reality. This is Volume I: The Man Behind the Warnings. The story continues in Volume II.
