Margaret Ellison Before the Memories Fade

The boxes of old family photos in your closet are not going to organize themselves, and every year you wait, the job gets bigger and the people who remember the stories get older. If you have ever opened a closet full of photo boxes, slide carousels, and VHS tapes, felt a wave of overwhelm, and quietly closed the door again, this book was written for you. Before the Memories Fade is the complete, step-by-step guide to digitizing old family photos, organizing decades of prints and slides, converting VHS tapes to digital, and finally taming the thousands of photos on your phone, designed specifically for people who feel too overwhelmed to start. Unlike technical manuals written for hobbyists, this heartfelt and often funny guide treats overwhelm itself as the problem to solve. Built around forgiving fifteen-minute sessions, it walks you from the first box to a finished, backed up, searchable family photo archive your whole family can enjoy, and it never pretends the emotional side of sorting a lifetime of memories does not exist. Inside you will learn how to sort thousands of photos fast with the simple ABC triage system, without guilt and without getting lost in memory lane. You will get plain-English scanning workflows for prints, slides, and negatives, with the exact scanner settings that matter and none of the jargon. You will learn why VHS and camcorder tapes are the most urgent items in your closet and how to rescue home movies before they fade forever. You will get an honest comparison of DIY scanning versus photo scanning services, including how to mail irreplaceable originals safely and what questions to ask any service. You will build file naming and folder systems that will still make sense in fifty years, master the 3-2-1 backup rule that protects your memories from fire, flood, and failing hard drives, and learn how to share the entire archive with children, siblings, and grandchildren. Most importantly, you will learn how to capture the stories behind the photos, recording parents and grandparents while they can still name the faces. Whether you inherited boxes of photographs from a parent, are downsizing a family home, or simply want to preserve family memories for the next generation, this book gives you the plan, the permission, and the gentle push to finally finish. Your family's story deserves better than a closet. Start with fifteen minutes.
