Sapientia Mundi Press The Wisdom of Hadewijch of Antwerp

A thirteenth-century Beguine mystic wrote about divine love with a ferocity that still burns through the page. Her name was nearly lost to history. Her words were not. The Wisdom of Hadewijch of Antwerp: Fire and Abyss of Love recovers the thought and art of one of the most extraordinary voices in Western mystical literature. Writing in Middle Dutch at a time when women had almost no formal theological authority, Hadewijch produced letters, poems, and visions of stunning intellectual power and literary beauty. Her subject was Minne, the all-consuming divine Love that seizes the soul, strips it bare, and refuses to release it until it has been remade from the ground up. This books traces the full arc of Hadewijch's vision, from her Beguine roots in thirteenth-century Brabant through her daring transformation of courtly love poetry into mystical theology, her searing accounts of visionary encounter, and her unflinching counsel to souls who dared to walk the path of total surrender. It examines her relationship to the Rhineland mystical tradition, her place among the great women mystics of medieval Europe, and the remarkable story of her disappearance from cultural memory and her recovery by modern scholarship. The Wisdom of Hadewijch of Antwerp: Fire and Abyss of Love brings a contemplative, historically grounded approach to a figure whose relevance extends far beyond the medieval period. Hadewijch's exploration of desire, suffering, the limits of reason, and the soul's capacity for the infinite speaks to anyone who has ever sensed that the deepest truths lie beyond the reach of ordinary language.
