Ken Tannenbaum Mistral

The American AI giants make you choose: capability or control. Mistral was built to refuse that choice. For most of modern AI's short history, the most capable assistants lived on a handful of US companies' servers - reachable only by sending them your data, on terms you couldn't negotiate. For many people, that's fine. For hospitals, banks, law firms, government bodies, European companies under GDPR, and anyone with information they aren't permitted to export, it's a wall: the capability is real, and unreachable. Mistral is Europe's answer to that wall. By publishing its model weights under genuinely permissive licenses, offering European infrastructure, and supporting self-hosting and private deployment, it turns "capability or control" into "capability and control." Mistral: The Complete Guide covers both halves of what Mistral makes - and treats them together, because Mistral does. Vibe is the assistant (formerly Le Chat, renamed in 2026), organized around three modes: Work, Code, and Chat. The open-weight model family is the part you can download, inspect, run yourself, fine-tune, or reach through an API - built so your data can stay under your control. Inside, you'll learn how to: Get started with Vibe and its three modes - and use it for real work and for codeUnderstand what "open weight" actually means - and run Mistral's models yourselfHandle data residency and sovereignty, and deploy with Vibe Enterprise and private cloudBuild on Mistral through La Plateforme - choosing a model, fine-tuning, and managing costMake the business and European-compliance case - and see where Mistral fits beside the US flagshipsKnow where Mistral falls short, and how to use it responsibly Who it's for: individuals and teams who want a capable, privacy-respecting assistant aligned with European data values; developers who want open-weight models they can run, fine-tune, and deploy free of lock-in; and regulated, sovereignty-conscious organizations - European institutions, regulated industries, the public sector - for whom data residency and self-hosting are requirements, not preferences, and for whom Mistral is often the only option that clears the bar. You don't need to be technical for most of the book - the developer and self-hosting material is signposted so you can navigate around it. Mistral isn't the smartest model on every benchmark, and this book won't pretend it is. What it is, more than any rival, is capable AI you're actually allowed to control.
