Cornelis Van Houte Land Warfare and the Operational Art

The character of war changes; its nature does not. For the better part of a generation, modern armies believed technology had retired the grim arithmetic of attrition, depth, and industrial endurance. The conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East have shattered that comfort, proving that war remains a contest of wills, capacities, and political outcomes. In Land Warfare and the Operational Art, Cornelis van Houte provides an essential framework for the serious student of strategy. Moving beyond the "tactical checklist" approach to modern conflict, this book examines the critical bridge between the battle and the war: the operational art. Tracing the evolution of conflict from the classical insights of Sun Tzu and Clausewitz to the Soviet theories of Deep Battle and the modern return of industrial-scale attrition, van Houte explores how strategy must subordinate clever methods to coherent political aims. This book is not a manual of rules-it is a guide to cultivating the judgement required to think clearly under the friction, uncertainty, and chaos of the modern battlefield. In this authoritative study, you will discover:The Foundations of Operational Art: How to design campaigns that serve political objectives rather than merely seeking military feats. The Enduring Realities: An examination of combined arms, the offensive vs. the defensive, command and friction, and the primacy of logistics. The Modern Landscape: Critical analysis of the precision-strike revolution, the return of attrition, and the challenges of urban, subterranean, and multi-domain operations. The Soldier-Strategist's Ethic: Why the study of history and strategy is the essential duty of every officer, regardless of rank.Designed for professional military education and the serious civilian scholar, Land Warfare and the Operational Art is an indispensable resource for understanding why wars are won, why they are lost, and how to avoid the recurrent, costly errors that have haunted military history for centuries.
