Nathan J. Whitlock The Forecast That Changed History

On the night of June 4, 1944, a Scottish meteorologist named James Stagg told General Dwight Eisenhower that the invasion of Europe could not go forward as planned. Less than twenty-four hours later, he came back with a different answer: a narrow, imperfect break in the weather, just enough to try. Eisenhower gave the order, and the largest amphibious invasion in history launched into marginal seas the next morning. This book tells the full story of that forecast: the three Allied forecasting teams who read the same data differently, the rigid tidal and lunar window that would not reopen for two weeks if the early window was missed, the postponement of the original June 5 launch, and the tense predawn meeting at Southwick House where Stagg presented the narrow window that became June 6. It follows the story onto the beaches themselves, comparing the forecast to the conditions actually encountered, and into the storm that struck two weeks later, in the alternate window the invasion would otherwise have used. Built from Stagg's own 1971 memoir, Forecast for Overlord, and the standard historical scholarship on Operation Overlord, this book treats the forecast honestly as what it was: not a certainty, but the best available professional judgment, delivered under conditions of genuine uncertainty, and acted upon by a commander who accepted full personal responsibility for the outcome. Clear, carefully sourced, and honest about how close the margin for error actually was, this is the real story behind one of the most consequential weather calls in military history.
