Joseph Hayes The Eighty-fifth in France and Flanders; being a history of the justly famous 85th Canadian Infantry Battalion (Nova Scotia Highlanders) in the various theatres of war, together with a nominal roll and synopsis of service of officers, non-commissioned off

A vivid, authoritative portrait of a Canadian battalion at war. Plainly told in spare detail. Joseph Hayes' The Eighty-fifth in France and Flanders follows the justly famed 85th Canadian Infantry Battalion, the Nova Scotia Highlanders, through the theatres of the Great War, offering a careful regimental narrative alongside the nominal roll and synopsis of service for officers, non-commissioned officers and men who served in France. At once operational and intimate, the book records a Canadian infantry unit's movement and resolve, placing a World War One battalion in the wider sweep of 1914-1918 France and Flanders while preserving trench warfare accounts and battlefield firsthand narratives that bring the regiment's experience into sharp focus. Valuable as both a Canadian military history book and a military historians reference, this volume belongs in any regimental history collection and on the shelf of family historians using genealogy military research: names, ranks and movements are set down with documentary care. Hayes writes with clear, unornamented purpose, and the account complements great war memoirs and broader Commonwealth forces studies by rendering the day-to-day discipline, command decisions and the harsh theatre of trench warfare without romanticising. Measured but vivid, Hayes' account balances operational chronology with human consequence: the roll and service synopses anchor the regiment's institutional memory so researchers and readers can trace the battalion's arc without sifting through scattered sources. As narrative it provides immediate orientation to battlefield firsthand narratives and trench warfare accounts for anyone drawn to the lived experience of a Canadian infantry unit. Whether consulted for genealogy military research, academic citation, or quiet reading beside other period memoirs, classic-literature collectors and casual readers alike will find enduring value. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
