This is the first art history book dedicated to Quranic manuscripts from the Indian subcontinent. This pioneering work highlights a long neglected corpus, exceptional for its scale and the continuity of its production, from the sultanate period to the modern era. By adopting an innovative approach based on the analysis of embellished forms of writing, and more specifically one of them, Bihari calligraphy, this unprecedented study examines the systems of thought, social dynamics, and networks of human interactions that governed the creation of such objects. This book is an essential contribution to the material and cultural history of the arts of medieval and modern India. This work received financial support from l'Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR) through the project "Calligraphies en caract?res arabes dans les zones fronti?res du monde islamique (CallFront)" (ANR-22-CE54-0015).
