Auke de Haan og Skriuwer.Com The History of the Netherlands

The Netherlands is a small country with an outsized history. In the seventeenth century, the Dutch Republic was one of the world's leading commercial and naval powers, home to a culture that produced Rembrandt and Vermeer while simultaneously running a global trading empire. This book traces the history of the Netherlands from its origins in the Low Countries through the Golden Age, the Napoleonic period, colonialism, and the modern era. Covering the long struggle against Habsburg rule that gave birth to the Dutch Republic, the extraordinary cultural and commercial flowering of the seventeenth century, the Dutch East India Company and its role in global trade, and the Netherlands' experience in both World Wars, the book provides a reliable and readable account of a nation whose influence on the modern world has been far greater than its size would suggest.
