M. R. James Casting the Runes

What if a single scrap of parchment could sentence you to death-unless you passed it to another soul first? First printed in 1911, Casting the Runes remains the quintessential story of malignant scholarship and occult revenge. This expanded modern edition preserves M. R. James's deliciously restrained prose while clarifying Edwardian idioms, letting every reader feel the slow, surgical tightening of the curse. Dive deep into a narrative that inspired films like Night of the Demon and countless cursed-object thrillers. Inside, you will encounter: A Scholar's Hubris - Follow Edward Dunning, whose cool rationalism shatters when the supernatural argues back-violently. The Deadly Transfer - Learn the sinister mechanics of the runes: accept them unknowingly, race the unseen for three months, or doom another in your stead. Occult England - Wander fog-bound railway platforms, echoing manuscript rooms, and fairground tents where devilry hides beneath bunting. Timeless Themes - Guilt, moral responsibility, and the peril of dismissing what lies just outside the academic footnote. A Legacy of Terror - A new after-chapter traces the tale's influence on modern horror cinema, urban legends, and "chain letter" folklore. Perfect for admirers of atmospheric dread, antiquarian mysteries, and morally thorny chills, this edition of Casting the Runes invites you to hold the cursed strip in your own hands-and hope it is not already too late.
