John Dewey The Quest for Certainty

"The Quest for Certainty" represents one of John Dewey's most significant contributions to modern philosophy and epistemology. Based on his prestigious Gifford Lectures, this work challenges the long-standing philosophical tradition that prioritizes theoretical knowledge over practical action. Dewey argues that the historical obsession with finding absolute, immutable truths-the "quest for certainty"-has created a false dichotomy between the mind and the world, often leading to a stagnation in human problem-solving. In this profound exploration, Dewey advocates for a shift toward experimental logic and pragmatism. He suggests that knowledge should be viewed as an instrument for managing experience rather than a passive reflection of a fixed reality. By applying the rigorous methods of the natural sciences to social and moral issues, Dewey provides a framework for "warranted assertibility," where ideas are tested by their consequences in action. This volume remains essential reading for those interested in the philosophy of science, the nature of inquiry, and the integration of theory and practice in the modern age.
