This ancient system included techniques such as throwing, striking, joint locks, and chokeholds, along with counters to these moves. From this principle, modern judo was born. Kano selected and refined techniques that embodied this idea, giving rise to a discipline where "Ju" means gentleness or yielding and "Do" means the way or principle. Together, Judo means The Way of Gentleness-a path where giving way can lead to ultimate victory. Kodokan, meaning "the school for studying the Way," became the foundation of judo as we know it-a martial art, a philosophy, and a way of life.
